Lady Mayoress of the City of London, Barbara Bear visits the Center for Women and Development and the “Peace House Shelter” in Hanoi

"Women all over the world, also in the UK, suffer from domestic violence. It is a global problem, and it is great to see the efforts that are being done in Vietnam against domestic violence.”, the Lady Mayoress of the City of London, Barbara Bear acknowledged when she visited the Center for Women and Development, a Department of the Vietnam Women’s Union on Monday, 21 March 2011. The Lady Mayoress, Mr. Nicholas Woolf from the Central Criminal Court of the City of London and Ms. Morang Stokes, wife of the British Ambassador in Hanoi, spoke with Mme. Tuyet, the Vice President of the Vietnam Women’s Union and Director of the Center for Women and Development, about the efforts to prevent domestic violence in Vietnam.

The Lady Mayoress expressed her sympathy for the Center’s projects and for its efforts to prevent domestic violence and support victims. Together, the delegation visited the “Peace House Shelter” of the Center for Women and Development, where women and children can find a safe place and receive psycho-social counseling in case they are affected by domestic violence. Lady Mayoress showed her fondness of women and children who suffer from violence and who live in difficult circumstances and shared some of her manifold experiences in this work field. “The pain and suffering from domestic violence can remain in the victim’s body, in each tissue, for many years.” she explained, having worked as a craniosacral practitioner for many years. The Lady Mayoress also spoke about her work as a Piano teacher and art sculptor, and enlightened how using art and music can be one method to help bring back the happiness into people’s lives.

In fact, the Center for Women and Development has opened the first shelter for victims of domestic violence in Vietnam in 2007. Until today, this shelter is the only one in Vietnam that provides a comprehensive range of services to the victims and their families. The project named “Peace House Project” also operates a second shelter for female victims of Human Trafficking. A counseling room with a 24/7 hotline is offering counseling services for the victims, but also for other family members who are affected by domestic violence. Furthermore, the Center runs a kindergarten where the children who accompany their mothers to the shelter can stay and play during the day while their mothers take part in counseling sessions, vocational trainings or group therapy.

The honorable delegation also expressed their interest in the Vietnamese culture. Together, they discussed the importance of traditions and the gender roles in the society.

The existence of a comprehensive legal framework on gender based violence and gender equality was a very positive sign and shows the huge steps

Vietnam has been taking in order to overcome discriminative practices against women and support the comprehensive development of all members of the society, including men, women and children.
